Unique Programs

  • SOCF Farm Project: The Scioto County Homeless Shelter started last year purchasing seeds for a garden.  Inmates from the Ross Correctional Camp are transported to work on the farm at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility during the week.  The inmates have a significant role in planting and cultivating the garden.  Over 1 1/2 acre of land is used to grow crops such as sweet potatoes, red potatoes, radishes, green beans, cauliflower, bell peppers, watermelon, carrots, onions, zucchini, lettuce, beets, and corn.  The crops are harvested and donated to the local Scioto County Homeless Shelter and food pantries.
  • ADAPT Cognitive Behavioral Treatment Program:  Developed and designed for inmates while incarcerated to receive intensive outpatient care for drug/alcohol abuse.  The 12 week program focuses on the implementation of cognitive and behavioral therapy through education to abolish dependency.

Reading Room

Reading room

In 2000, former First Lady Hope Taft approached the Director about establishing a reading room for the children who visited their incarcerated parent at the Pickaway Correctional Institution. This idea spread across the state, and now the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction maintains children’s reading rooms in each prison.

The reading rooms encourage family literacy by providing a pleasant and comfortable setting for both child and incarcerated parent. Each room is stocked with a wide variety of children’s books

A variety of arts and craft supplies for the children are also available in most of the rooms. Many of the supplies and books are donated by employees and service organizations.
