Chillicothe Resident Wins National Award

(Columbus) --- The Correctional Accreditation Managers Association (CAMA) has awarded Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) employee A. J. Hamburger with its Accreditation Manager of the Year award. Hamburger received the award during CAMAís annual conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma this week. Accreditation managers are responsible for assisting correctional agencies in meeting the standards required for American Correctional Association (ACA) accreditation.

DRC Director Reginald A. Wilkinson is committed to the accreditation process and praised Hamburgerís contributions. "A.J. plays a major role in DRCís accreditation achievements," said DRC Director Reginald A. Wilkinson. "He helped shepherd the Department through the process required for full agency accreditation." In 1998, Ohio became one of only two state correctional agencies to have earned full ACA accreditation. This means that all prisons, both boot camps, the Ohio Parole Board, parole and probation supervision services, the Corrections Training Academy, correctional industries and central office have all achieved the standards required by the ACA. At ACAís 1999 Congress of Correction in Denver, the Commission on Accreditation for Corrections recognized DRC with the Chairmanís Award for Excellence.

Hamburger began his career in corrections in 1979 as a Commissary Manager at the Ohio Penitentiary. He has worked in various capacities at the Southeastern Correctional Institution, the Hocking Correctional Facility and the Ross Correctional Institution (RCI). In 1990 he became Accreditation Manager at RCI where he developed policies and procedures and organized the institutionís filing systems for their first ACA accreditation audit. In 1995 Hamburger became DRCís statewide Accreditation Administrator. He is also a consultant for the ACA, conducting accreditation audits at facilities in other states.
