PRISON EMPLOYEES SUPPORT READING PROGRAM

(Columbus) --- Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) Director Reginald A. Wilkinson presented Innis Elementary School students with computer software and over 700 books donated by DRC central office employees. Today’s presentation was a culmination of a DRC campaign in which over 8,000 books and $6,500 were collected statewide.

"Our employees are known for their generosity and enthusiasm," said Wilkinson. "DRC’s ‘Get Hooked on Books’ campaign was held in support of Governor Bob Taft’s OhioReads program, and we exceeded all expectations. Each prison, parole region and central office collected books and money, and donated the proceeds to schools in their neighborhood."

Innis Principal Linda Lindsey praised the effort. "Innis students love to read," said Lindsey. "Each night they are encouraged to read for at least twenty minutes. We realize that reading is fundamental to everything that we do."

Innis kindergarten students sang three songs to 200 of their classmates. Director Wilkinson challenged the children to read the books and he promised them he would return to see if they were reading.
