Dayton Man Receives Top Corrections Honor

(Columbus) Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) Director Reginald A. Wilkinson today named Glenn Kevin Stiles, Sr. Ohio’s Corrections Officer of the Year and recipient of the prestigious Ronald C. Marshall Award. Stiles, 43, is employed at the Montgomery Education and Pre-Release Center in Dayton. In his assignment as entry officer, Stile’s paramount responsibility is to monitor staff, visitors and guests as they enter and leave the facility. "I am the first person each employee, guest or visitor has direct contact with after entering the institution," said Stiles. "I try to set the tone for each day by greeting them and providing information they need." To assist others assigned to this front-line security post, Officer Stiles created an informational notebook outlining daily activity and containing necessary authorization forms. He also served on a committee to improve entry procedures.

The nine-year veteran began his corrections career in food service at the Lebanon Correctional Institution in 1989. Stiles is known for his courtesy and professionalism, even when his duties require him to stop and challenge fellow staff members. His attention to detail and adherence to security are acknowledged and respected by all. Stiles’ advice to new corrections officers is to "be informed, prepared, on time, and above all, honest with yourself and others."

Officer Stiles is active in his church, the PTA and is a Dayton Urban League Parent. He is currently enrolled in the department’s P.E.T.E. (Personal Enrichment through Education) program and a Sinclair Community College computer course. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Bowling Green State University in 1977.

Officer Stiles was chosen to receive the Ronald C. Marshall Award by a committee of former Officers of the Year and management representatives. The committee interviewed each of Ohio’s 30 Correctional Officers of the Year - one from each prison - and selected Officer Stiles as the 1998 Ronald C. Marshall Award recipient. Ohio’s top correctional honor was named in memory of Ron Marshall who began his career as a guard at the Ohio Penitentiary and rose through the ranks to become warden at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility before he died.
