Prison Director to Announce Top

Correction Officer of the Year at Annual Ceremony

(Columbus)  Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Director Terry J. Collins will be joined by State Representative John White (House District 38), along with other dignitaries, at the 2008 Ronald C. Marshall Award Ceremony on Friday, May 2nd beginning at 11:30 a.m.  This event, held each year to name DRC’s top Correction Officer, will be at the Reginald A. Wilkinson Corrections Training Academy in Orient.  The Ronald C. Marshall Award is presented to Ohio’s top Correction Officer who is selected among thirty other Correction Officers of the Year from each of Ohio’s state-operated prisons.  The Officer is selected by a panel of past recipients through an interview process.

The keynote speaker for the event is State Representative John White, Chairperson of the Correctional Institution Inspection Committee.  Representative White is responsible for sponsoring two key pieces of legislation that will have positive effects on DRC.  House Bill 113, recently signed into law, will allow DRC to recruit more volunteers not only from the faith community, but also civic and non-profit organizations.  The second key piece of legislation is Substitute House Bill 130 the DRC Omnibus Reentry Bill, which most recently passed out of the House and is headed to the Ohio Senate.   The Bill is divided into three sections: enhancing offender reentry efforts and reducing employment barriers faced by ex-offenders; expanding criminal justice treatment and sentencing options; and increasing operational efficiency and cost-saving measures.
