OHIO DEPARTMENT OF REHABILITATION
AND CORRECTION HOSTS
BUSINESS SEMINAR "HIRING THE EX-OFFENDER"
(Columbus) -- Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) Director Reginald A. Wilkinson hosted an educational seminar on October 30, 1997, to inform and educate business and community leaders from the Columbus area about the benefits of hiring an ex-offender.
The seminar took place at the Columbus Convention Center. DRC, working in partnership with the Ohio Prison Fellowship and AirNet Express, presented the seminar in an effort to inform potential employers about the advantages of hiring ex-offenders. Several business managers spoke about their positive experiences with employing ex-offenders.
"Many inmates have received valuable training while incarcerated, and it is certain that their ability to obtain employment helps decrease the possibility of their return to prison. With the help of private industry and support from prison ministries, we are offering these prisoners a second chance," stated Wilkinson.
Many Ohio businesses have participated in 17 DRC sponsored inmate job fairs at 12 prisons. The job fairs, in conjunction with the educational and vocational programs, provide offenders with the skills they will need for employment. The educational seminar for potential employers was the second such event. The first was held in Cleveland last July. Other seminars are being planned for future dates.
