Governor to Break Ground in Conneaut

(Columbus) -- Governor George V. Voinovich and Reginald A. Wilkinson, Director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction will break ground for the Lake Erie Correctional Institution.  The ceremony will take place on Thursday, October 23, 1997, at the prison site in Conneaut, Ohio.

The Lake Erie Correctional Institution was authorized by House Bill 117 and will be the first privately operated prison to house Ohio prisoners.  This $30 million prison will employ more than 325 staff and have an annual operating budget of $12 to $13 million.

The Lake Erie prison will be a 1,000 bed medium/minimum security prison with seven primary operational components:  an administration building, six housing units, segregation, infirmary, recreation and education, food service, including a warehouse and vehicle service outside the perimeter.   The prison is scheduled for completion in the summer of 1999.

DRC will contract with a private corrections company to oversee prison security and operations.  The State of Ohio will audit prison operations to ensure compliance with standards and contract language.
