Inmates Compose Original Music and Perform Classic Children’s

Songs on a Family-Themed CD

(Columbus) - Today the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) will begin distributing approximately 15,000 compact discs (CD) to inmate family members, prison libraries, prison ministry groups, and several prison re-entry programs, such as Family Life Centers, Children of Incarcerated Parents, the nursery at the Ohio Reformatory for Women and the pre-natal program.   Compact discs will also be donated to public libraries, children social services agencies, halfway-houses, Adult Parole Authority regional offices and other community organizations.

The CD, entitled “Wings of Hope”, is a collection of lullabies for newborns, sing along songs for small aged children, and parenting tips for new mothers and fathers.   Many of the lyrics are a rendition of old childhood classics such as “This Old Man”, while some of the songs are originally composed by the inmates.

“This unique project exemplifies our Department’s efforts to provide opportunities for the inmates to give something back to their communities,” said DRC Director Terry J. Collins.   “Not only are the inmates getting the opportunity to display their talents on this CD, it also provides a chance for them to do something positive and nurturing for their children and others.”

This collaborative effort began in late 2004 with the Office of First Lady of Ohio, Hope Taft, and the Ohio Resource Network’s initiative to start a community-wide partnership allowing inmates to give back to all children of Ohio.  The inmates were carefully selected and screened by prison administrators before they were able to participate.  The final production included inmates from Richland, Grafton, Trumbull, Ohio Reformatory for Women, Franklin Pre-Release, and Warren Correctional Institutions.

The Ohio Resource Network is funded by the Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction and the Ohio Department of Education.
