Prison Systemís Meat Processing Career Center Open for Tours

(Columbus) Ė The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) will be hosting media tours at the DRC Meat Processing Career Center (MPCC) located at the Pickaway Correctional Institution in Orient.  The tour will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 23, 2005.  Media in attendance will receive a tour of the facility.

DRC cut ribbon at the facility in November 2004.  Ohio Penal Industries is responsible for the operation of the plant.  In 2007, the MPCC will process 1.9 million pounds of beef and 1.8 million pounds of pork.  This 37,000 square feet structure, which cost $10 million to construct, will enhance DRCís self-sufficiency capabilities by enabling the meat processing operations to adequately supply all 32 DRC prisons a sufficient amount of meat products.
