Ohio Prisons Tsunami Disaster Relief Effort A Major Success

(Columbus) -- Today Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) Director Reginald A. Wilkinson announced that the agency’s Tsunami Disaster Relief Effort had come to a successful conclusion, raising nearly $69,000 for those impacted by the December 26, 2004, tsunamis in southeast Asia.  Director Wilkinson will present Michael Carroll, CEO of the American Red Cross of Greater Columbus, a check for $40,000 on Thursday, March 10, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the DRC Central Office located at 1050 Freeway Drive North, Columbus, Ohio.

Soon after the devastating tsunamis impacted the region, a department-wide relief effort was announced. Each prison and parole region, along with DRC Central Office, collected donations and hosted fund-raisers to aid the victims.

“The spirit of giving among DRC employees is well documented,” Wilkinson stated. “Whether in response to natural disasters close to home, such as the recent floods in Ohio, or those half a world away, DRC staff are eager to lend their support to those in need.”

DRC has a long-standing tradition of benevolence.  The giving spirit of DRC employees has been demonstrated on many occasions.  Each year DRC participates in the Combined Charitable Campaign (CCC), raising money for charitable organizations across the state.  In 2004, DRC raised over $687,000 for the CCC.

A check for the additional $28,676 will be sent to Operation USA, a privately funded organization based in California.
