LaECI has engaged in many community service projects over the past few years.  One of the most significant projects is the Lighthouse Learning Center’s contribution to the construction of homes for Habitat for Humanity.  The homes are completely fabricated in the Lighthouse Learning Center’s shop and when done are ready to be shipped to the construction site.

The plans for each home are created in the OCSS Computer Aided Design (CAD) program.  The Career-Technical CAD construction program has been most helpful as it creates a real life experience in construction techniques for the inmates.  There is also a good deal of satisfaction from students knowing that their project is going to be a lasting contribution to the community.  For example, all of the Habitat homes are approximately 1,100 square feet and take approximately eight to ten days to complete in the shop.  The homes are framed and all the framing is predrilled for all the electrical and plumbing.
